Shaking the Inspiration Tree

Today I decided to open to inspiration: to the possibility of something new happening in my life in some small way.

Instead of following the usual routine, doom scrolling or trying to reduce my ‘to do’ list I ventured out to a new side of town and to a new class. Just choosing to do that expanded something in my felt experience. When I got to the class, I chatted to a friendly woman. The teacher was playful and the exercises were just what I needed to bring some groundedness into my body.

After the class I decided to do something random that I wouldn’t usually do: something free that may be interesting. So I went to the city museum. This museum is a treasure trove of the unexpected, displaying everything from meteors to a gypsy caravan.  I decided to open to the possibility that something within the museum might be compelling – it didn’t matter what that was.

I found it. There it was in the ceramics section - a contoured antique yellow Chinese vase. Its yellow smooth shininess was liquid sunshine, waking up the whole of my being. .

Then there were the meteors, which had fallen from outer space, deciding for some strange reason to make earth their new habitat; and the Victorian display of taxidermy which was both creepy and fascinating at the same time.

It was a feast of delights for my inner child: the random and the small providing that much needed ‘wow’ factor.

The true variety of creation is mindblowing and the visit inspired a number of questions. ‘How did the earth create so many amazing colours and shapes of granite?’ ‘How can there be so many species of animals and plants in the world?’ ‘Isn’t it fascinating that every piece of art originally produced is unique?’

Inspiration doesn’t always drop in. Sometimes all it takes is to open to possibility or to open the aperture of curiosity ever so slightly. ‘What would happen if I did this?’ ‘Would it be interesting if I visited the places in my town with the eyes of a curious visitor?’ This is then a nod to the creative path to unfold.

We can choose to be victims to our circumstances or we can look for pathways to create. The possibilities are endless and infinite and we can simply choose what feels good in each moment.

As I walked back from the museum I dropped in to a café which had a leaflet which gave me an idea for a vision of something I wanted to create. As I walked out of that café there was a song playing that I had been thinking about that morning but which I hadn’t heard for ages – a synchronicity or sign from the universe that I was dancing willingly with the creative flow.
